The wording in the source

Timing

  • Facilities required to maintain an NMP, pursuant to these rules, must have soil samples collected each year from all fields owned or operated by the dairy, beef, poultry, or commercial truck wash operation to which livestock waste, manure, or process wastewater from the operation was land applied.

    Section 150, Soil Samples

Method

  • All soil samples collected pursuant to this chapter must be representative samples that are collected by a CSS at the depth indicated by the approved NMP for each facility. Samples shall be collected pursuant to SSB approved methods and submitted to an approved laboratory.

    Section 151, Soil Sample Collection

  • August 1997 University of Idaho, Soil Sampling Bulletin 704 (revised).

    Section 104.01, Incorporation by Reference

  • All persons who collect soil samples pursuant to Subchapter A must be a certified soil sampler via the Department Certification Program.

    Section 152, Soil Sample Certification

Who it applies to

  • Facilities required to maintain an NMP, pursuant to these rules, must have soil samples collected each year from all fields owned or operated by the dairy, beef, poultry, or commercial truck wash operation to which livestock waste, manure, or process wastewater from the operation was land applied.

    Section 150

  • All dairy farms licensed to sell milk for human consumption, beef cattle feeding operations required to implement a Nutrient Management Plan (NMP), poultry operations required to implement an NMP, certified NMP planners and certified soil samplers.

University of Idaho Extension BUL 915, Soil Testing to Guide Fertilizer Management (October 2023)

The wording in the source

Timing

  • For optimal soil fertility management, samples should be collected each year, and fields fertilized for a realistic potential yield of the intended crop.

    Sampling Frequency

  • It is recommended to collect soil samples at least once during each crop rotation cycle (Walworth 2011).

    Sampling Frequency

Method

Depth

  • With wheat rooting depth reaching up to 5 ft, it would be beneficial to sample wheat fields to 5 ft, in 1 ft increments.

Sampling Technique, 4. Define sampling depth

  • Although most fertilizer guides are based on a 2 ft depth, the sampling depth should be tailored to crop-specific rooting depth for the most accurate recommendations. For beans and sugar beets, the soil samples are typically collected from 2 ft. For potatoes, 1 ft samples are appropriate, due to a shallower rooting depth.

Sampling Technique, 4. Define sampling depth

  • *An absolute minimum of 10 samples from each sampling unit is necessary to obtain an acceptable sample.
