De acordo com Andrews, esse material possui duas qualidades importantes. Primeiro, ele tem poros extremamente pequenos, em torno de 400 nan\u00f4metros, que permitem a passagem de \u00edons nitrato, mas impedem a entrada de part\u00edculas de solo. Segundo, ele \u00e9 hidrof\u00edlico, ou seja, atrai \u00e1gua como uma esponja.<\/p>\n<p>Andrews afirma: \u201cIsso significa que qualquer \u00e1gua contendo nitratos ser\u00e1 absorvida pelo nosso sensor, o que \u00e9 crucial porque o solo tamb\u00e9m absorve \u00e1gua.
